The nano is best for ultimate portability and reliability. Good to have if you're going to use it for music while jogging, working out, etc. The hard drive is solid state - no moving parts. The video iPod has a miniturized harddrive - that means a platter rotating at 5400 rpms with a read/write head roughly 1 micron away. As a computer science guy, please take my word that that configuration is less than optimal for high impact use - jogging, etc. It weighs three times as much and could get annoying while flopping around. If I didn't want mine to use while working out, I would have bought the video one. You can watch videos on the Nano if you install Linux, but space is an issue, and the screen is pretty small.
